AIDS patient dies

One of the 25 HIV-AIDSpatients in Negros Occidental died recently, Provincial Health Officer Ernell Tumimbang said yesterday.

The male patient, whose name was withheld, died at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City on January 23,he said.

His remains were immediately cremated, Tumimbang added.

HIV infections in the Philippines are “increasing at an alarming rate” especially among adolescents and this has been attributed to their increasing use of social media, according to thelatest report of the Department of Health.

Dr. EnriqueTayag, director of the National Epidemiology Center of the Department of Health, said there is a “concentrated epidemic” of HIV infection among Filipino adolescents aged 15 to 24.

Tayag reported the number of HIV cases in this age group rose from only 44 cases in 2006 to 489 cases in 2010.

Tumimbang, however,  said there is no alarming increase of HIV-AIDS cases in Negros Occidental.*
