Hospital, union row continues

The Bacolod Our Lady of Mercy Specialty Hospital employees’ union claimed at a press conference yesterday at the Algipayan Church, Bacolod City, that the management of the Bacolod Our Lady of Mercy Specialty Hospital has denied labor rights to its workers through its rampant termination without cause.

“The continuous termination of employees is the systematic harassment of the management to bust our union instead of recognizing it for a collective bargaining negotiation to have a harmonious relationship,” Union president Roberto Villaram said.

The recent termination of 15 workers from the dietary department, led them to file a notice of strike before the National Conciliation and Mediation Board for unfair labor practices and union busting.

Meanwhile, BOLMSH lawyer Roger Reyes had earlier said that the termination was only done to cut its expenses and keep the hospital operating, and that the union has no collective bargaining agreement with them.

Reyes also said that they have terminated other employees before the creation of the union and when they terminate, they do not consider whether the employee is favoring the management or not.

Villiam said this only showed they are after their profits rather than the welfare of employees and deprive its patients of a quality health care.

Ronald Ian Evidente of Kilusang Mayo Uno said they support the union in its fight against unfair labor practices and will organize the strike after the seven-day strike ban.*LTG
