Military welcomes charges
filed by ‘HR abuse’ victims

Lt. Col. Pio Diñoso III, commanding officer of the 79th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army in Siaton, Negros Oriental, yesterday said he welcomes the charges filed by a volunteer of the militant human rights group, Karapatan, and civilians claiming to be victims of human rights abuses and other violations by him and his men.

Diñoso’s statement came in reaction to an electronic statement from Karapatan-Central Visayas saying that “victims of recent military abuses in Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental, filed formal complaints last Friday at the Ombudsman-Visayas against five identified soldiers of the 79th Infantry Battalion, including its commanding officer.”

Cassava farming
gains ground

A growing number of farmers with idle lands in southern Negros are looking forward to earning extra income from planting cassava or “balanghoy,” as Ginebra San Miguel Inc.  accelerated its program encouraging cassava farming in unproductive areas throughout the island.

Representatives of GSMI  recently explained the program during a  visit to farmers from Siaton and Bayawan City in southern Negros Oriental, saying that Ginebra is specifically tapping idle lands to provide income and livelihood opportunities in the areas with the company as the guaranteed market for the produce.

Cash pay-out program
held in Zamboanguita

A total of 1,058 residents of Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental, who  identified as beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program  received cash, at the first ceremonial cash pay-out yesterday at the  municipal gymnasium, a government press release said.

This is the first time  4Ps beneficiaries in the province received immediately their conditional cash transfer under the 4Ps, after the Department of Social Welfare and Development partnered with Globe Telecommunications to tap the latter's G-Cash Remit services for an easier and hassle-free pay-out, the press release said.
