Cops abort search to
avoid violence

   ‘SWERTRES’ OPERATION
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

A raid on the house of a suspected illegal numbers game “swertres” coordinator in Tanjay City, Negros Oriental, by the police was aborted when occupants of the house resisted, prompting the law enforcers to withdraw to avoid a violent confrontation Tuesday night.

The foiled plan to serve a search warrant was aggravated by the alleged refusal of barangay officials to participate as witnesses in the police operation.

The search warrant, dated Oct. 18, 2011 and issued by Judge Winston Villegas of the Regional Trial Court Branch 43, was for the house of suspected “swertres” coordinator, Procolo Gazo, of Barangay Azagra, Tanjay City, police reports said.

‘MENINGOCOCCEMIA’
DOH:  Boy’s death no
cause for alarm

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

The Department of Health provincial monitoring team in Negros Oriental has cautioned the public against over-reacting to the death of an 11-year old boy who reportedly died of meningococcemia.

There is no cause for alarm and it is an isolated case, Dr. Socrates Villamor, chief of the provincial DOH, said. She added that their office and the Negros Oriental Provincial Health Office have recorded the case as just “suspect”.

Investigation by the health officials showed that the patient, who died recently at a hospital in Dumaguete City, was diagnosed to have meningococcemia, Villamor said.

9 NegOr LGUs to compete in
Buglasan Fest showdown

BY RENE GENOVE

Nine contingents from the municipalities and cities of Negros Oriental will compete in the grand "Festival of Festivals" and street dancing showdown tomorrow.

The events will be the highlight of the Buglasan Festival in the province.

The festival is the provincial fiesta, participated in by the six component cities and 19 municipalities. It started in 1981 when a search was conducted to compose a contingent to represent Negros Oriental in the Folk Arts Theater Festival.
