2-year-old drowns

A 2-year-old girl drowned in a fishpond in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, yesterday.

SPO2 Bibiana Ramos, chief of the Himamaylan police Women’s and Children Concerned Desk, said the body of Beverly Juanico was found floating in a fish cage in Brgy. 4, Himamaylan City.

Initial police investigations showed that the victim had been left by her aunt, Jessica Juanico, in a makeshift nipa hut in the place, and may have fallen into the fishpond.

Jessica had been tasked by members of her family on Tuesday to take Beverly to Brgy. Mambagaton, Himamaylan.  On the way, however, Jessica met her friends, who invited her for drinks.

When Jessica went to fetch her niece from the nipa hut, the minor was nowhere to be found, police investigations showed.

The next day, her body was found floating in a fish cage, and must have been carried away by the current from the fishpond, police said.

Ramos said Jessica, who is now being  detained at the Himamaylan police headquarters, may be held liable for the death of her niece.*GPB
