Negros Occidental received locally produced weather gadgets from the Department of Science and Technology, recently.
The DOST has produced two kinds of weather equipment and saved the government millions of money, through the Industrial Technology Development Institute, a government press release said.
The Automatic Weather System, or AWS, would cost more than P1 million if procured outside the country but was manufactured locally at less than half that amount.
Early this year, an AWS was installed in Brgy. Felisa, Bacolod City.
Called a “mini PAG-ASA,” the equipment sends localized weather data through sms covering 30 to 40 km radius, a DOST report said.
Another gadget, the Automatic Rain Gauge or ARG, also costs P1 million if bought from foreign market but was built in the country at about P250,000 each.
The DOST installed a set of AWS each in Kabankalan, Sipalay, San Carlos and Sagay cities.
An ARG was also set up in Bacolod City barangays Estefania, Tangub and Alangilan.
Both equipments are virtually maintenance-free because the ARG is solar powered while the AWS only needs a monthly load for its sim. The gadgets are projected to last three to five years.
The DOST goal is to eventually install AWS and ARG in all cities and municipalities in Negros Occidental to give weather officials accurate real-time data, and preventing disasters and minimizing loss of lives and properties, the press release added.*
