San Enrique brgy head
told to save mangroves

BY CARLA GOMEZ

The barangay captain of Nayon in San Enrique town yesterday promised to remove the dikes surrounding the mangroves, Jose Ma. Valencia, chief of staff of Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., said yesterday.

Barangay Captain Rex Custodio was asked to explain his side after the office of Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. received a complaint that the  mangroves in Nayon were being destroyed.

Custodio said the dikes were built around the mangroves to protect his barangay from erosion, Valencia said.

However, Valencia said it was explained to Custodio that the mangroves were placed there precisely to protect against erosion.

If the dikes were blocking sea water from reaching the mangroves they will die, the Custodio was told.

Valencia said the barangay captain promised to address the problem.*CPG
