Green Alert hits
biotech confab

Environmental group Green Alert Negros called the International Conference on the Adoption of Biotech Crops in the Developing World to be held today at the Hyatt Manila a “diabolical summoning of Biotech Godzillas”, its press release said.

GAN claimed that the conference aims to increase the profit of certain companies by manipulating and patenting life through modern biotech.

The conference is organized by The John Templeton Foundation, International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications, the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture, the National Academy of Science And Technology Philippines and the Agricultural Biotechnology Support Project II, the press release said.

GAN also claimed that the event will only highlight the fallacy of Genetic Engineering to justify and renege the approval of pending GMO crops in the Philippines including Bt Eggplant and Golden Rice.

The group cited the research conducted by Ibon and MASIPAG, where an estimated 270,000 small-hold farmers in the Philippines are being forced to grow GM corn and ending up in debt, the press release said

Negros will stand to its commitment to ban the entry of GMOs as part of the province commitment as an Organic Island and will support all initiatives and actions against the promotion of GMOs, Junjun Mojica of GAN said in the press release.*
