Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3 rd District), chairman of the Liberal Party in Negros Occidental, yesterday denied reports that he is campaigning for some United Nationalist Alliance senatorial bets.
He said he was at lunch with UNA senatorial candidate Jose Victor Ejercito-Estrada in Bacolod City yesterday noon because they had been friends for a long time.
The UNA bets Benitez is reportedly supporting are Ejercito-Estrada, Nancy Binay and Jack Enrile.
“I am still with the Liberal Party and it is my duty to campaign for our (LP) partymates. I'm here primarily because JV has been a friend for long time. I don't think that because we belong to different parties our friendship should stop,” he said.
Benitez denied claims that he gave marching orders to his supporters to support UNA senatorial candidates.
As far as the LP is concerned he has a duty to support the line-up assigned to him, Benitez said.
The latest survey shows the LP still has a 10-2 lead in the Senate race and they have less than a month left for the others to catch up, he added.
President Benigno Aquino chose the Team Pnoy senate candidates to support his reform programs, Benitez said.
Meanwhile, Benitez said the campaign of Vice Governor Genaro Alvarez Jr. has been picking up, going towards the final stretch and he believes he will win the Negros Occidental gubernatorial race on May 13.
It has been difficult to begin with, because the Marañon name for governor has been there since 2001, from Gov. Joseph to Alfredo Marañon, Benitez said.
But he would not say if Alvarez's claim that he will win by 300,000 is accurate.
Benitez said from day one, black propaganda as been waged against the vice governor.
He also said the LP continues to support the re-election bid of Rep. Alejandro Mirasol in the fifth district of Negros Occidental, unless he publicly announces that he is supporting the bid of Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr.
Benitez had earlier announced the LP Negros' support for Alvarez.*CPG
