Two mourners were killed and 18 others, mostly teenagers and minors, were injured when the truck they were riding in fell into a road side canal in Brgy. Lipat-on, Calatrava town, Negros Occidental at about 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Killed on the spot were Vivencio Macalua and Alber Seton, both 37 and residents of Brgy. Hilub-ang, Calatrava, town police chief, Senior Insp. Rolie Pondevilla, told the DAILY STAR yesterday.

The victims' relatives identified as Jovanie, 12, Jocelyn, 14, and Julieta, 32, all surnamed Seton, Mylene, 16, Junvert, 14, John Paul, 10, Veb, 30, Marcelino, 18, Aileen, 19, Ruel, 29 and Marcus, 59, all surnamed Macalua, of Brgy. Hilub-ang, were also injured, police records showed.

Also injured were Carmen, 50 and Epefanio Recesio, 51, Laurencio, 45 and Julieta Harabharab, 44, Lorlyn Nabite, 19 and Julito Morales, 33, also of Brgy. Hilub-ang, police records also showed.

The victims were brought to the San Carlos City Doctor's Hospital and most of them are still confined there. The accident happened while the victims were on their way home after attending the burial of their relative in Brgy. Calampisawan, Pondevilla said.

The truck driver identified as a certain Jojo Loqueloque evaded arrest while truck owner Avelino Macalua, also a relative of the victims, assured that he will shoulder their hospital expenses, Pondevilla also said.

Investigation conducted by Police Officer 3 Rogelio Tagalili showed that Loqueloque lost control of his vehicle when another truck overtook his vehicle at the highway of Kilometer 125.

The truck fell on its right side into a road canal causing the passengers, who were at its back portion, to be thrown out.

Pondevilla said the victims are not filing charges against the driver since the truck owner is also their relative.*APN
