DENR collects P6M
protected areas user’s fees

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Region 7 said it has collected around P6.2 million in resource user’s fees, or RUFs, from 24 protected areas in Central Visayas in the first quarter of 2013.

Cebu, with six protected areas, posted the highest collection at P4,095,406.33, or 66.27; followed by Negros Oriental, with two protected areas, with P1,866,890.00, or 30.21 percent; and Bohol, with P217,360, or 3.52 percent.

Regional executive director Isabelo Montejo of DENR-7 said that the RUF will be pooled as an integrated protected area fund and will be used to sustain the financial assistance for protected areas.

He said 75 percent of the funds can be used to finance projects within the protected areas.

Montejo said the region’s protected areas would no longer be totally dependent on the government because they will have their own funds to use for operations through the IPAF.*PNA
