SU preparing for
‘Tipon’, Founder’s Day

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Silliman University in Dumaguete City is preparing to host the international “Tipon Silliman” 2013 celebration from August 21-25, and its 112th Founder’s Day, Aug. 26-29.

Betsy Merto-Engle, co-chair of Tipon International, said this will be the first time that the gathering will be held at SU, and around 200 alumni from the United States and Canada are expected to attend it.

The number could still rise as other alumni may fly in on their own and not avail of the tour packages, Engle said. Local-based alumni coming for the Founders’ Day activities are also expected to join the “Tipon”, she added.

The Silliman University Alumni Council of North America is the umbrella organization of the chapters representing the alumni and friends of SU in the United States and Canada. There are 34 other chapters overseas, in Australia, Europe, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and 54 in the Philippines.

The SU said security preparations are underway, and discussions were held with the Philippine National Police and the Dumaguete City government officials.

School officials said they believe that there are enough hotels and inns to accommodate the visitors, and that they are also promoting a home-stay program.*JFP
