SJI-Blue dribblers
keep 10U title

Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Culutural and Educational Association Under 10 basketball defending champion St. John’s Institute survived a threat from St. Benilde School, 63-59, to keep the title in the Condura Cup 10 Under tournament organized by the Basketball Coaches Association of Negros Occidental.

Despite the underdog tag, the Benilde boys managed to put the pressure on the champions and kept the game close in the final minutes.

From a 9-6 lead, SJI Blue darted with a 6-0 run before closing the first quarter at 22-13. The Johnians controlled the tempo of the game by outscoring SBS, 6-2, midway before settling for a 32-21 advantage at halftme.

In the third quarter, Bert Celis Jr. ignited SBS' 6-2 spurt but the efforts did not stop SJI as the latter held on to the lead at 44-38 going into the payoff period. Celis also accounted for several blocks that frustrate the young SJI Falcons.

With open substitution in the final quarter, SJI felt the pressure as SBS tied the score at 52-all with 2:59 left.

SBS eventually took the lead at 59-57 but a turn over allowed SJI to get back their composure to seal the victory.*
