11th Waling-Waling Festival

ivy

Did you know that the Waling-Waling is the Philippines’ second national flower? The first is, of course, the Sampaguita. This, despite the fact that the Waling-Waling really originates from the Philippines, while the Sampaguita is from India.

This startling revelation was told to us by plant guru Alfonso Ponce Enrile, during his speech at the opening of the 11th Waling-Waling Festival, hosted by the Negros Occidental Orchid Society Inc., at Robinsons Place Bacolod recently.

The members of the Orchid Society looked so elegant in their formal Filipiniana attire as they welcomed their guests, headed by Mayor Monico and wife, Josefa Puentevella, Dr. Marilyn Marañon and Elsa Leonardia. Also in attendance were the members of the Negros Occidental Garden Club, who came in their official uniform.

Everyone oohed and aahed at the fabulous display of the exotic Waling-Waling orchids at the Fountain Area of the mall. The entire backdrop for the stage was an intricate design of vertical gardens filled with rare plants among the deep purple, fiery fuchsia, pale pink hues of the majestic bloom. The effect was simply breathtaking! Kudos to NOOS vice president Rene Dofitas, famous landscape artist, for his excellent work.

NOOS president Ana Mercedes Gatuslao welcomed the guests, followed by a most interesting overview by Enrile. Judge Nap Diamante inducted the new officers and members of NOOS. Delicious native delicacies were served after the program.*

thriller forum today

A forum on the action thriller movie “On The Job” will be held by ABS-CBN Bacolod today at the 2nd floor of Robinsons Place Bacolod and is open to the public, a press release from the station said.

It will feature the movie’s director, Erik Matti, and multi-awarded Negrense actor Joel Torre, who will discuss the film that has received high praises from international publications, like The Hollywood Reporter that called it a “caustically cynical action thriller that soars in action”, and Variety, that raved about its gritty and steadily engrossing pace, the press release also said.

The film also stars Piolo Pascual and Gerald Anderson, and tells of the intersecting lives of four men on opposites sides of the law – a pair of hit men out to do another job and a couple of policemen hell-bent on their trail.
