‘Big-time pusher’ nabbed

A suspected big-time illegal drugs personality in Negros Oriental was arrested in a buy-bust operation near the City Central Elementary School in Barangay Poblacion 3, Dumaguete City, at about 4:45 p.m. Monday.

Police identified the suspect as Rey Bilandres “alias Poloy”, 32, of Purok Orchids, Sitio Canday-ong in Calindagan, one of the five barangays of Dumaguete that the local PNP has tagged as seriously affected by illegal drugs.

Two large plastic sachets of suspected shabu, with an estimated street price of P50,000, a Honda Wave 100 motorcycle, a cell phone, and the P500 marked bill placed on top of paper strips used as bogus money, were seized from Bilandres, by joint operatives of the Provincial Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Group, National Bureau of Investigation, Dumaguete police and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.

A team from the Human Resource Division and Development of the Police Regional Office 7 and Regional Special Training Unit conducted the firing proficiency examination for the first batch of policemen who will receive the Generation 4 Glock 17 9mm pistols.

The proficiency firing aims to allow policemen to familiarize themselves with the Glock pistol.

To qualify for the gun, a policeman must hit the target six out of 10, in less than three seconds per target, Police Officer 2 Dondie Callao, training officer of RSTU-7 said.Unlike other examinations, there will be no retake in the proficiency firing test, he added.

SU tribute set Friday
for Edilberto Tiempo

A tribute “Man of Literature” in celebration of the birth centenary of Sillimanian fictionist Edilberto Tiempo, will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Audio-Visual Theater 1, Multimedia Center of Silliman University in Dumaguete City.

The tribute will feature the launch of two books, including “Celebration: An Anthology Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the SU National Writers Workshop”, edited by Ian Rosales Casocot, and a special literary issue of the Silliman Journal dedicated to Edilberto and Edith Tiempo, edited by Anthony Tan, Marjorie Evasco, and Grace Monte de Ramos.
