World boxing champions Donnie Nietes and Merlito Sabillo received P10,000 each as cash incentive from the Bacolod City government.
Nietes, who successfully defended his World Boxing Organization light flyweight belt against Mexican challenger Sammy Gutierrez, and Sabillo, who got away with a split draw decision against Nicaraguan Carlos Buitrago, paid a courtesy call at the Bacolod Government Center yesterday.
Bacolod Mayor Monico Puentevella, who turned over the checks to the two boxing champions, reminded them to stay fit, take care of their health and invest their money wisely.
He said Nietes and Sabillo are just two of the four world champion boxers from Bacolod City and they proved to the world that Bacolod is the home of world champions. The two other boxing champions are WBO Asia Pacific super bantamweight titlist Genesis Servania and the undefeated super flyweight champ Arthur Villanueva.
Meanwhile, Nietes said that good timing and training made it possible for him to knock out Gutierrez in the third round, following two knockdowns in the opening round.
He said he is thankful to all Bacoleños who supported him and prayed for him.
Sabillo, on the other hand, said Buitrago was undefeated before their fight and threw several combinations that made it impossible for the Bacoleño pug to fight him toe-to-toe.
He said he is open to a rematch against the Nicaraguan to prove to the world who is the better fighter between them.
The two boxers were later joined by the mayor in a motorcade in the city.*NAB
