Fortu thankful
for backwages

BY CARLA GOMEZ

Negros Occidental Provincial Accountant Merly Fortu yesterday said she is happy and thankful to Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan for approving the payment of her back wages.

Fortu returned to work in September after the Civil Service Commission ordered her reinstatement with finality, and with payment of her back salaries and benefits corresponding to the period of her termination.

She was dismissed from her job on July 6, 2010 for grave misconduct, following a complaint filed by then Vice Governor Genaro Alvarez Jr. that she had spoken to him in a raised voice at a meeting at the Capitol.

The CSC, in ordering the reinstatement, said Fortu’s inadvertently raising her voice while engaging the vice governor in a heated argument, cannot be considered as one constituting the administrative offense of grave misconduct.

The Negros Occidental Sangguniang on Wednesday approved the allocation of P2.4 million to pay the back wages of Fortu.*CPG
