Milo Little Olympics taekwondo gold medalists Jason Lenard Locsin and Irene Therese Bermejo are eyeing a slot in the Junior Philippine National Taekwondo Team that will represent the country in the 10th WTF World Junior Taekwondo Championships in Taipei next year.
Both Locsin and Bermejo captured the gold in their respective event during the national finals of the 2013 Milo Little Olympics held in Cebu City on November 30.
Locsin, from West Negros University, dominated the junior men flyweight division, while Bermejo from Trinity Christian School, reigned in junior women featherweight category.
Joining them in the list of medalists are fellow NTU Tigers jins Shaira Isabel Garbanzos of La Consolacion School – Gardenville and Camille Andrea Miraflores of University of St. La Salle.
Garbanzos won a silver medal in grade school girls’ category, while Miraflores settled for the bronze, also in the grade school girls group.
The four NTU Tigers represented the Visayas area in the national finals after topping the regional qualifying round in August.
Stephanie Marie Lamayo of St. John’s Institute and Irene Therese Bermejo of TCS, who also won in the regionals, did not participate in the national finals due to school commitments.
Regional silver medalists Veronica Garces and Jinielka Hansella of Cebu City, who replaced Lamayo and Bermejo, went on to win the gold for the Visayas team in the finweight and flyweight categories.
Meanwhile, after passing the preliminary evaluations, Locsin and Julienne Bermejo will have to undergo final evaluations early January next year to secure a seat in the Philippine junior taekwondo team and compete in Taipei.
With NTU Tigers head coach and mentor Jimjim Chua out of the country, the young jins are training under the tutelage of Crystal Pauline Reyes, a bemedalled taekwondo athlete and former member of the national team.*NAB
