The Department of Interior and Local Government will form committees today for the Liga ng mga Barangay election on December 18, its Bacolod head, Glenn Guzman, said yesterday.
Guzman said these committees are for credential, nomination, election and the board of canvassers composed of barangay captains in Bacolod.
He said the association of mayors or vice mayors is like a private organization and their role is only to supervise the conduct of election.
In the Liga nga mga Barangay, the DILG head is the chairman of the Board of Election Supervisor and its members are the representatives of the Commission on Elections, non-government organizations, Department of Education, and the religious sector, Guzman said.
The nomination committee will start accepting certificates of candidacy of barangay captains seeking a post in the Liga nga mga Barangay from Dec, 15 to 17. The election on Dec. 18 will be held at the Masskara Hall of the Bacolod City Government Center, he said.
Guzman said that since the barangay is non-partisan, they are appealing to politicians to spare the barangay captains from politics.
But that is easier said than done, because in reality, politicians meddle in the affairs of the Liga ng mga Barangay, he said.
Guzman said “We never stop appealing considering that our Sangguniang Kabataan is in danger of being abolished because we did not give significance to its purpose.”
The barangay only became a government in January 1, 1992 . Right now, there are proposals for its abolition as a local government unit and to make it part of the municipal and city government, while the barangay captain will be given appointive positions, he said.
“We do not want this to happen, so we should ensure that the barangays serve their purpose,” Guzman said.*CGS
