After keeping their respective titles in long jump and 100m hurdles, Mary Anthony Diesto and Rocel Mae Pahilanga earned their second gold medals for the Negros Occidental High School (Area IX) contingent at the 2013 Palarong Panlalawigan (Provincial Meet) at the Panaad Park and Stadium yesterday.
Diesto reigned in triple jump as she registered 11.80m to let Ailyn Tumbali of Area IV picked up the silver with her 10.88m mark. Jessa Paunellan of Area III settled for the bronze with 10.54m.
It was a close contest for Pahilanga in the 400m hurdles as she finished the event with a time of 1:09.50 to edge by a hairline margin Kim Cyra Pedriña of Area III, who clocked 1:09.56. Bernalyn Bejoy of Area VII (Bacolod City) settled for the bronze at 1:11.80.
Also winning his second gold medal yesterday was Alexis Soquiño of Area VII who finished the secondary boys' 400m hurdles event at 56.67 seconds. Soquiño earlier won the gold in 100m hurdles.
Placing second, once again, to Soquiño is Rudolf Dave Orbita of Area IV, who register4ed 57.30 seconds while Soquiño's teammate Rodrigo Delaben Jr. grabbed the bronze with 59.48 seconds.
In elementary girls' 400m hurdles, Dani Rose Ornopia of Area II grabbed the gold with her time of 1:15.74 to prevent Tracy Mercado of Area VII from getting her second gold medal in the meet. Mercado, who clocked 1:16.85 yesterday, edged Ornopia in the 100m hurdles in Day 1. Sherly Cañete of Area VI settled for the bronze .
Completing the gold medalists in 400m hurdles yesterday was John Zyrus Noveros of Area VII, whose 1:12.14 time beat Area VI Jonel Salde's 1:14.24 , and Ellias Saricala of Area I with 1:16.20.
Meanwhile, after a heartbreaking .01 long jump loss to Antonette Aguillon on Monday, Maycee Magdangal of Area 1 finally clinched the gold in elementary girls' triple jump yesterday with her 9.53m leap, while her teammate Windy Rose Arquisal secured the silver with 9.28m and Trexie De la Torre of Area VII, the bronze with 9.02m.
Also bouncing back in Day 2 was John Paul Plomeda of Area IV who avenged his loss in shot put against John Mark Mangao of Area VI on Monday with a golden finish in elementary boys' discus throw yesterday.
Plomeda hurled the heavy disc to a distance of 23.92m to earn the gold, while Mangao registered 22.82m for the silver. Mark Ace Antipuesto of Area I picked up the bronze with 21.30m.
In elementary basketball, the NOPSSCEA team composed of 10 players from St. John's Institute and two players from Bacolod Tay Tung High School bowed to Area V by five points. Ralph Allen Cagalawan of La Carlota City scored 35 points for Area IV.
In volleyball, Area II elementary boys' team beat NOPSSCEA in three sets, 9-25, 25-13 and 25-17, while Area V cruised to its second victory at the expense of Area II, 25-8, 25-20.*NAB
