San Carlos girls beat Davao in
Thirsty U14 football fest

San Carlos City Negros Football Club beat Ateneo de Davao, 1-0, to capture the championship in the U14 girls category of the 10th Thirsty Cup Football Festival held Feb. 15 at Abellana Sports Complex in Cebu.

Bracket along with Ateneo de Cebu, Reunited FC, and CIE Cebu, San Carlos FC advanced to the finals undefeated.

In the elimination round, San Carlos crushed CIE, 3-0, then edged Ateneo de Cebu, 2-1, and blanked Reunited FC, 4-0, to top their bracket.

Facing STC Cebu in the quarterfinals, the girls from San Carlos City, once again prevailed, 2-0, with Riza Isabel Carmona and Charissa Lemoran scoring the goals.

In the semifinals, Ateneo de Cebu engaged San Carlos in a tough match that ended in a draw at regulation. The San Carlos girls, however, secured a seat in the finals by winning in the penalty shootout.

The championship match against Ateneo de Davao saw both sides defending well and delivering well-placed attempts until Riza Isabelle Carmona scored in the last three minutes of the match to ice the game for San Carlos. Carmona also earned the Most Valuable Player Award.

The Thirsty Cup football Festival is an annual event sponsored by Thirsty Juice and Shakes sanctioned by Cebu football Association.

San Carlos City Negros FC General Secretary John Carmona said the the tournament provided their team a very good exposure for the coming Philippine Football Federation Festival of Football scheduled on February 22-25 in San Carlos. Five teams in the Visayas have confirmed their participation in the tournament, Carmona said.*NAB
