Alijis brgy head backs
Leonardia, Sayson bids

BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The barangay captain of Brgy. Alijis in Bacolod City yesterday said he is supporting Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia and Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson for congressman and mayor of Bacolod, respectively.

Barangay Captain Diogracias de la Vega, a former ally of then Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella, made the announcement during his birthday celebration yesterday at the New People’s Hall of Alijis.

De la Vega, however, said that he is supporting former vice mayor Renecito Novero for vice mayor since he is his lawyer.

He is also supporting councilor candidates from the camp of Novero, MKK and the Nationalist People’s Coalition, particularly the mayor’s brother, Pros, De la Vega added.

“It is a big factor, because in the past elections he (De la Vega) did not support me and Alijis is one of the biggest barangays in Bacolod,” Leonardia said when asked for his reaction.

Leonardia said he needs all the help he can get and if it comes from people he did not expect it from, and those who did not support him in the last election, he believes this will fortify their strength.

“So I welcome him (De la Vega) because he is also a veteran barangay servant,” he said.

De la Vega said he was former Sangguniang Kabataan chairman and barangay kagawad before he became the barangay captain.

Under the administration of Leonardia, his barangay has availed of several projects and programs that he had requested, he said.

De la Vega thanked Leonardia for these projects that include the Taculing-Alijis bridge.

Leonardia said it was his idea to put up the bridge during his first term as mayor in 1995 to 1998 and he hopes it will be finished before the end of his fourth and last term.

It took time for the bridge to be finished because when the Department of Interior and Local Government gave it to the city, the spare parts were not complete and these had to be purchased, he said, adding that there was also an expropriation proceeding.

Leonardia said the bridge will connect Alijis to Handumanan and Mansilingan and will serve as an alternative route.

Meanwhile, De la Vega said his birthday wish is to have good health to be able to enjoy more birthdays.*CGS
