Appliance Centrum/LA Gasoline Station came from behind to defeat Johann Kendrick Tan, 87-82, while ESJ Centre dealt Mang Inasal its first loss, scoring an 85-74 overtime victory Monday night in Class B of the 13th Tan Kek Pin Memorial Basketball Cup at Tay Tung High School Po Hang Gym.
Overcoming a third quarter 64-58 deficit, Johann Kendrick took a 77-70 lead at the midway of the fourth quarter behind the fastbreak attack of Yan yan Dy, RB Chua and Joshua Co.
But Rey Pandoro scored six straight baskets to cut the deficit to a single point before JKT Danny Boy nailed a triple for 80-76.
Centrum Jose Miguel Montinola scored on a jumper and Peter Ortaliz putback cut the lead anew to 82-81 with 40 seconds left.
After a botch attempt by JKT, Pandoro was fouled with 20 seconds left and converted two free throws for the lead, while teammate Pao Pao Lim scored the last four points for La Gasoline to register their first victory in the tournament.
JKT was in the driver’s seat, 19-13, in the first quarter behind Danny Boy Uy and Ryan ALegario’s combined 15 points.
However Centrum had a productive second quarter as RJ Iligan scored seven points including a rare four-point play and Pao Pao Lim was throwing his weight in the shaded lane with 11 points to take the lead at the break, 42-38.
Luigi Coo sunk three triples and Montinola had seven points to keep the lead for LA Gasoline going to the fourth quarter.
Lim paced Centrum with 20 points, backstopped by Pandoro with 19, Luigi Coo scored 17, Montinola had 13 points.
JKT was led by Co with 18 points, Uy added 17, Dy contributed 16, RB Chua made 15, and Ryan ALegario had 10 points.
In the nightcap, ESJ offense came alive in the overtime period spearheaded by Brian Coo and Vincent Javelosa to outscore Mang Inasal 15-6 to share a 2-1 win-loss slate with their victims.
In a low scoring fourth quarter, Badong Eufre carried the brunt of the ESJ offense as he delivered 11 of the 13 ESJ quarter points before Mark Binguan scored a triple for Mang Inasal with 10 seconds left to force the extension.
Eufre had a gamehigh 28 points, 11 of them delivered in the second quarter to lead the rally from a 10 points first quarter deficit to come within striking distance at halftime, 40-37.
Brian Coo had 18 points for ESJ while Binguan led Mang Insasal with 14 points.
In last Friday’s match-up, Dynamic Metals squeaked past Fox Shox 89-88 as Johnnyson Yu exploded for 36 points, while Jeremy Coo scored 21 points. Shox was led by John Paul Tan with 33 points.
Foodman remained as the only undefeated team by holding off La Filipina Trading, 84-81.
Dr Emil Guanzon paced Foodman with 27 points, while Kenderson Hao topscored for La Filipina with 25 points.*NAB
