NPA sending extortion
letters to politicians

BY GILBERT BAYORAN

Barely a month before the campaign period for local candidates on March 29 started, the New People’s Army has began sending “extortion letters,” not only to candidates, but also to owners of business establishments, Army Maj. Gen. Jose Mabanta said yesterday.

“These extortion activities of NPA must be stopped once and for all,” Mabanta said.

He reiterated his call for all candidates, and owners of business establishments, not to succumb to the pressure of the NPA, and urged them to report it immediately to the authorities concerned.

P1.4B budget okayed as
SP fails to override veto

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The P1.4 billion budget of the Negros Oriental provincial government for 2013 was signed yesterday by Gov. Roel Degamo after members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan failed to override his veto.

SP Member Rodrigo Alanano said the veto was taken up at their regular session recently, but they lacked the numbers to override it. A vote of 10 is required to supersede it.

Degamo said he is duty-bound to enter his veto on Item 33 of the appropriations ordinance, on the intelligence fund, and Item B on Gender and Development, as the removal, transfer and reduction of funds allotted are highly prejudicial to the interest of the people.

Local NPC to
support LP, UNA bets

Rep. George Arnaiz (Neg. Or., 2nd District) yesterday said he and his affiliate political candidates in the province will support several senatorial candidates from the coalition lineups of the Liberal Party and the United Nationalist Alliance for the May 13 elections.

Arnaiz (Nationalist People’s Coalition) said he will discuss whom to support for senator with gubernatorial candidate Margarito Teves, 3rd District Rep. Henry Pryde Teves (Lakas-CMD), the mayors and other political candidates in their alliance ticket.

“There are candidates in the Liberal Party-led coalition that we have to support”, he said, citing Loren Legarda, Jack Enrile, former NPC president Ernesto Maceda, and Francis Escudero. From the UNA, those to be considered are Jose Victor Ejercito and Gregorio Honasan, Arnaiz said.
