Negros athletes retain
overall WVRAA title

Riding high on the consistent performance from the girls’ team, Negros Occidental retained the overall championship in the 2013 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet that ended yesterday in Roxas City, Capiz.

Negros accumulated 412 points in the elementary competition while Iloilo posted 395 points in the final tally. In secondary level, Negros registered a total of 469.5 points while Iloilo finished with 435 points.

The Negrenses managed to keep the overall championship despite the loss in both elementary and secondary boys’ basketball, football, and volleyball.

The elementary and secondary softball girls from ETCS and Domingo Lacson National High School in Bacolod City thwarted the anew the efforts from the Ilonggos to snatch the crown.

Other team titles won by the Negros in elementary competition are: girls’ badminton, boys’ chess, gymnastics, boys and girls’ swimming, boys and girls’ table tennis, girls’ taekwondo, boys and girls’ lawn tennis, and girls’ volleyball.

In secondary level, Negros dominated the girls’ athletics, boys and girls’ badminton, baseball, boxing, boys and girls’ chess, gymnastics, girls’ sepak takraw, boys and girls’ swimming, girls’ table tennis, boys and girls’ taekwondo, girls’ lawn tennis, and girls’ volleyball.

Earlier, Negros suffered a devastating loss in secondary boys’ basketball as the Ilonggos overwhelmed by a huge margin the selection of players from Negros Occidental.

The elementary and secondary boys’ football team suffered the same fate at the hands of their respective opponents, while the boys’ volleyball teams also failed in its quest to capture the regional title.

Meanwhile, reports from Roxas City said a certain Willy Fermin from Victorias City, father of one of the football players from Negros Occidental, was rushed to the hospital after suffering a mild heart stroke while watching the match between host team Capiz and Negros at the Villareal Stadium.

Reports said Fermin was given the appropriate medical treatment in the hospital.*NAB
