CHR probes
maltreatment of inmates

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

The Commission on Human Rights in Negros Oriental is investigating reports of alleged abuses of inmates by Bais City policemen, its special investigator, Jess Cañete, said yesterday.

Cañete said they received reports that some Bais City cops are maltreating inmates detained at the lockup facility of the police station, and that this has been going on for some time.

Although being held for various offenses, detainees still have rights that must be protected, he added.

He said a thorough investigation on the alleged maltreatment will be conducted, as well as the complaint of William Cabanag Jr., of Bais City.

In his affidavit-complaint, Cabanag said he was walking to a variety store to buy cigarets when several policemen came up to him and forced him to go with them to the station on Feb. 8 for no apparent reasons, Cañete said.*JFP
