Agri-fishery census set

The National Statistics Office will conduct the census of the agriculture and fishery sector this year.

Trainings for enumerators have started, and actual inventory is expected to start in March, Negros Oriental provincial statistician, Ariel Fortuito, said.

The census will determine the status of agriculture, account for the heads of livestock and poultry in a locality and determine the top three crops being raised in the province.

13 ‘criminals’ killed in
shootout with police

MANILA - Police in the Philippines killed 13 members of a criminal gang in a shootout yesterday, the third violent incident within days amid widespread calls for stricter gun controls.

The battle erupted after the gunmen in two vehicles tried to smash through a police checkpoint near the town of Atimonan, according to the national police headquarters' operations centre.

A police statement said one senior police officer was wounded and taken to hospital. It said 10 firearms were recovered from the gang members, including an M-16 assault rifle.

Preservation of Calungsod
thanksgiving mass site eyed

Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma has called for the preservation of the site where a thanksgiving mass was held for the canonization of San Pedro Calungsod.

“The event should be immortalized, remembered,” he said.

The Prelate was worried that the templete, which was built with bamboo, cloth and other indigenous materials, will soon deteriorate.

“The ground is not ours. Sooner or later, the template will be gone and considering its material, it will not last,” he said.
