Bacolod City’s teenaged basketball sensation Kib Montalbo and the La Salle Green Archers formally sealed the deal of his joining the team this school year in a five-hour meeting yesterday at the house of business tycoon Eduardo Cojuangco Jr. in Manila.
Cojuangco, one of the team managers of the Green Archers, was joined by head coach Gee Abanilla, assistant coaches Juno Sauler and Joe Ward, Jeron Teng, and DLSU sports development head Emmanuel Calanog in welcoming Montalbo into the team.
Also present in the meeting were chief recruiter David Dichupa, Quinito Henson and the other managers of the team.
Montalbo, told the DAILY STAR he is happy with his decision and he looks forward to his first game with the Green Archers. He will have his first practice with the team today and will return to Bacolod City tomorrow.
A graduating senior student from St. John’s Institute, the young cager said he is planning to take up a course in Marketing at the DLSU.
Montalbo said he is familiar with the Green Archers’ players and he is eager to meet all of them. As soon as he graduates from SJI in March, he said he will head off for Manila to join his new team.
The meeting with the La Salle coaching staff and the team managers yesterday was to formalize Montalbo’s entry into the team, his father Roger said.
As a parent, the older Montalbo said he is glad of the opportunity for his son to play in the UAAP and he is confident that La Salle will take good care of him.
Before coming into an agreement, the La Salle team managers have been having a series of meetings with the Montalbos in Bacolod City.
Dichupa, who had been following Kib’s progress as a player for years, along with Abanilla and team manager Eric Ongkauko were present during the NOPSSCEA championship game between SJI and UNO-Recoletos at the WNU Gym, last month.
SJI swept UNO-R in the finals with Montalbo topscoring for the young Blue Falcons.*NAB
