Data on firearms can now be obtained through short messaging system (SMS).
Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz, Western Visayas police director, yesterday said the use of SMS will hasten the verification of data on firearms, especially those recovered from crime incidents.
PRO-6 records show that there are about 33,067 loose firearms in Western Visayas, including those with expired licenses.
Cruz said the new system will be a big help in hastening the investigations of gun-related crimes.
Records of firearms recovered, or confiscated, in police operations are being verified to serve as basis for the filing of appropriate cases against the suspects.
Cruz said the use of modern technology guarantees the timely and accurate access to firearms data for effective law enforcement, specifically crime prevention and crime solution.
Of the more than 33,000 loose firearms, 2,247 gunholders have renewed their gun licenses, and 3,807 signified their intention to renew their firearms licenses, police records also show.
Starting January 13, the PNP will enforce the COMELEC gun ban, with the start of the election period.*GPB
