Cadiz SPED students take lead
in nat’l age-group chess tourney

Outstanding chess talents are starting to emerge from Cadiz City as a group of students from SPED Training Center dominated the Round 1 of the 2013 Natinoal Age-Group Chess Championships Visayas Qualifying at the

Cadiz City Multi-Purpose Hall yesterday.

Grade 3 student SPED students Zain Carl Anthony beat John Raymund Dulutan in the 10-under category, while schoolmate Travor Benjamin Gendrala, 11, prevailed over Karl Jhunz Gonzales in the 12-under group.

Also posting a win in Round 1 was SPED student Kristel Shayne Herrera, who turned back Mailyn Cangucang of Escalante in the girls’ 16-under category. Fellow Cadiznon Divine Joyce Sarabia joined her in the list of winners in the girls’ department.

In boys’ 10-under, Adrian de Luna of Guimaras won over Eris Las Jr., while Gil Casa, Jr., of Sta. Barbara, Iloilo beat Kirk Jan Ogapong, and Mark Adrian Ong of Sipalay City got past Vince Divinagracia.

Early winners in the 12-under include Aeron Keife Charles Sinining, who defeated Roy Andrada Jr., Alphard Gonzales of Davao City winning against Arnold Azuelo; Alfonso Louis Olendo of Dumaguete City outsmarting Maynard Jesse Barbas of Cadiz, and Ilonggo Cyril Felrod Telesforo outplaying John Noel Tan.

In girls’ 12-under, Fiona Geeweneth Guirhem (Iloilo) beat Elaine Joyce Santiago of Cadiz while Sara Francine Olendo (Dumaguete) Natori Biazza Diaz (Sagay) had a draw.

Other Round 1 winners were Cristy Cabungcang (Escalante) in 14-under and Glydelle Casa (Sta. Barbara) who beat 2013 Kiddies Chess Rapid Chess champion Manilyn Cabungcang after four hours of play in the 12-under category.

The tournament drew participation from 74 participants who are competing in six different age groups.

The top two winners in the competition will advance to the national finals where the winners will have the chance to represent the country in the 2013 ASEAN-Age Group in Bangkok, Thailand on June 8 to 17 and the 2013 Asian Youth Chess Championships in Mashdad, Iran on June 20 to 27.*NAB
