P10,000 bail in libel charge

A block-timer of local DyGB FM radio station in Dumaguete City yesterday posted bail of P10,000 for his temporary liberty after a warrant was issued for his arrest on the libel case filed against him by Siquijor Gov. Orlando Shane Fua.

Johnny Cahilog, alias “Rex Kandos Santos”, surrendered to the Dumaguete City police when he learned that a warrant for his arrest had been issued by Judge Alejandro Bahonsua Jr. of the Regional Trial Court Branch 46 in Larena, Siquijor.

Cahilog, the owner and the manager of the radio station, have been accused of libel by Fua, for the alleged malicious reports against him. The charge against the station owner was junked, but arrest warrants were issued against Cahilog and the station manager.

Cahilog denied insinuations that he tried to elude arrest last week when the warrant was issued. He said he was in Davao to attend the wedding of his younger sister before the police received the warrant, and that he had informed his lawyers about his trip.

He posted bail at around 9 a.m. yesterday at the Hall of Justice.

Cahilog said the charge will not prevent him from reporting on anomalies and irregularities committed by government officials, and defending the cause of the masses.*JG
