Nine players from Lopue’s Table Tennis Association will be seeing action in the Southeast Asian Junior Table Tennis Championships scheduled on July 12 to 16 in Harrison Plaza, Manila, LOPTTA president Leonito “Diotay” Lopue said.
The nine players include current junior No. 1 John Paul Gubaton, No. 5 Joshua Castro, Edmund Garganian Jr., and Francis Garganian for the boys’ team, and current No. 1 junior Emy Rose Dael, No. 2 Rose Jean Fadol, reigning Palarong Pambansa champions Shamiela Pineda, Beverly Paulma and Ann Gella Borbon for the girls’ team.
In a press release, Lopue said the inclusion of the nine LOPTTA players in the Philippine team lineup was relayed to him by Table Tennis Association of the Philippines president Ting Ledesma.
The boys’ team will be mentored by Hosea Alvarez while Marrel Lagunday will coach the girls’ team.
“It will be the first time in Philippine history that the main core of junior players, who will represent Philippines come from one provincial club,” Lopue said.
He added that it is a good sign that provincial players are leveling up if not doing better than their Manila counterparts.
Lopue said the Philippine players will be up against teams from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Laos.*NAB
