Basecom beats Sweet Crystal,
Royal Star prevails over Jast

It was an unexpected reversal of fortune in the endgame for Basecom and Royal Star as both teams survived a lackluster first quarter performance to pull off a convincing win against Sweet Crystal and Jast Enterprises in Class B of the Fil- Sino All Asian Countertrade Inc. Intercolor Basketball Tournament at Tay Tung High School Po Hang Gym in Bacolod City.

Basecom beat Sweet Crystal, 72-65, capitalizing on a full court man-to-man pressure in the second haf after falling as much 12 17 points behind in the first quarter.

Royal Star, on the other hand, beat Jast Enterprises, 79-70, as they employed a similar half court man-to-man defense at the start of the payoff quarter to get away with the win.

In the battle between Basecom and Sweet Crystal, the latter had a blazing start and posted a 24-12 at the end of the first quarter as RJ Iligan delivered three treys, while teammates Nico Yap and Luigi Coo combined for 15 points.

But Sweet failed to sustain its stellar start as it yielded the advantage in the next three quarters.

Basecom was led by Mark Velez with 23 points, while Ton Ton Chua and Richard Uy added 15 points each and Simon Tan finished with 10 points.

Berto Uy paced Sweet Crystal with 20 points, Coo scored 14, Iligan tallied 13 points, and Lexter Ang with 6 points.

Meanwhile, Jast Enterprises took a 13-point in the first quarter and held a slim advantage at the break, 39-37.

Jast extended the lead to 57-51 going into the payoff period as Clarence Quingco lobbed a 3-point shot at the buzzer to give Jast some breathing room.

But Roya Star's suffocating defense paid dividends as they captured the lead at 60-59.

Both teams fought to several lead changes as Royal Star controlled the boards and their aggressiveness in the shaded area forced the fouling out of the Jast frontcourtmen Jerky Ong and Ardian Ong.

Jast can only managed to sneak in 13 points in the quarter and failed to contain the Royal Star players.

Jolly Castillo led the balanced Royal offensive with 14 points, Tubby Villanueva finished with 13, Errol Su with 12 points, Keith Banzon shot 11 points, Wilson Dy and Aldrian Tan had 9 points apiece, and Ryan Tumbagahan with 7 points.
