showdown set tonight

Reigning World Boxing Organization minimumweight title holder Merlito “Tiger” Sabillo and challenger Jorle Estrada of Colombia both made their weight limit of 105 pounds yesterday for their scheduled 12-round title-fight tonight at 6 p.m. at the Solaire Resort and Casino grand ballroom in Paranaque City.

Sabillo (22 wins, 11 KOs with no loss or draw) tipped at 104 lbs. while Estrada (16 wins, 5 KOs, 6 losses) made it 103 lbs.

After the official weigh-in, the 27-year old Sabillo then drank water and ate his fruits and spaghetti.

Phoenix streaks past Petron,
New Energy posts 2nd victory

Phoenix 2000 bounced back from an opening day defeat by posting a 69-48 win against Petron 2001-02, while New Energy Marketing 2008-10-11 rolled to its second victory via a 74-51 taming of Eleven Degrees/Foodman 96-99/2003 in the Msgr. John Liu & Msgr. John Su Memorial Basketball Cup at the Msgr. John B. Liu Activity Center in Bacolod City.

Paolo Li keyed Phoenix’s offense in the opening quarter as he single-handedly outscored Petron with 13 points for a 22-8 firth quarter advantage.

Phoenix only scored six points in the second quarter, giving Petron the chance to catch up, but the latter did not made much headway as they can only manage nine points, allowing Phoenix a 28-17 lead at halftime.

Minoza wins in
Pueblo de Oro tourney

Frankie Minoza took the best dished out by Angelo Que and – like in the previous round – proved again he’s better, closing out with another bogey-free 67 for another five-stroke victory over Elmer Salvador in the P1 million Pueblo de Oro Championship at the Pueblo de Oro layout yesterday.

Like in his romp at ICTSI Del Monte last week where he shot a flawless nine-under 63 to rally from five down and win by five over five others, Minoza played like a man on a mission, gunning down five birdies behind solid shotmaking, superb iron play and steady putting.
