Comelec suspends
biometric validation

The Commission on Elections has suspended the validation of records for voters without, or with incomplete biometrics effective yesterday.

Provincial Comelec supervisor Jessie Suarez said this is because of the preparations for the October 28 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

Of the 1,574,787 voters in Negros Occidental, 118,784 have incomplete biometrics data. They are required by the Comelec to complete the procedure in preparation for the 2016 presidential elections.

Suarez said the biometric validations will resume after the barangay and SK elections.

In its Resolution No. 9741, the Comelec en banc said the suspension was necessary in order to maximize the workforce of the Offices of the Election Officers nationwide in the conduct of the registration of voters and listing of Katipunan ng Kabataan as well as for other preparatory activities for the synchronized barangay and SK elections, there is a need to suspend the conduct of validation.

The Comelec had started the validation of biometrics on July 1. Those who fail to update their biometrics records will not be able to vote in the 2016 national presidential elections, according to the recently passed Mandatory Biometrics Registration Act.

Suarez, however, said the voters’ registration will push through on July 22 to 31, 2013.*GPB
