5 Negrenses vying
for farming awards

Five farmers from Negros Occidental has been nominated in some categories for the annual Gawad Saka Search Regional level in Iloilo, administrative officer Rose Pondias of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, said yesterday.

Pondias said Reyzard Dumilag of La Carlota City is vying for the award for Outstanding Young farmer for Western Visayas, Mabini Mission Jr. of Binalbagan town for Outstanding Fisherfolk, John Eric Bernabe of Silay City for Outstanding Farmer in High Value Crops (vegetable), Reynaldo Espanola as Outstanding corn farmer and Renato Catiempo of Bago city for Outstanding Organic Agriculture Farmer (rice).

The Sipalay City Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council has also been nominated from outstanding FARMC in the region for 2013, Pondias said.

She added that the regional search committee of the Department of Agriculture Region 6 will visit the areas of the nominees and announce the winners later.

The winners at the regional level will receive P10,000 in cash and will be the official representatives of Western Visayas to the national Gawad Saka competition.

The contestants from Negros Occidental were winners of the Pasidungog sa Mangunguma Kag Pangisda during the Panaad sa Negros Festival 2013.

Louie John Giluagan of Hinobaan town was third place in the outstanding young farmer of the year category during the national search of Gawad Saka 2010.

The Gawad Saka awards are conferred by the DA to farmers and fisher folk with exemplary achievements in the field of agriculture.*APN
