Negros Occidental is on its way to reaching its goal of becoming a rice self-sufficient province with a 23 percent increase in its rice production for 2011-2012, a press release from the government said.
“No province, no region in the country has had this increase in rice production,” Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said in the press release.
Marañon also said that because of the province’s program on crop insurance, the national government is increasing the coverage of the insurance from 4,000 hectares in Negros Occidental to 12,000 hectares of rice land.
The NFUCIP is an initiative of the provincial government geared toward food security, the press release said.*
