The music could change

Ninfa Leonardia

One thing you can say about Vice President Jejomar Binay – he is not one to play coy. He proved this again when he admitted that hearing himself being addressed as “President” during political rallies is “getting to be music to the ears”. He is talking about his own ears, of course. I'm sure his heart beats a little faster when he is introduced as “the next president of the Philippines” as barkers in political meetings are wont to do.

Well, he will be hearing that same music played over and over as the campaign sorties go on. Who does not like to be called “President” when that is the very title one is dreaming of and working for? Why, even tycoon John Gokongwei was tickled pink to be addressed as “Mayor” when he was conferred that honorary title by Bacolod City recently. When he stood up to deliver his speech, he also did not play coy, but said “Mayor John Gokongwei. I like the sound of that”. And he was not in a political campaign or rally.

Anyway, as things look now, it does seem as if the former mayor of Makati is a shoo-in for the presidency. So far there does not seem to be any contender as focused and determined as he. But then, who can tell? Remember what a sure winner Senator Manny Villar seemed to be shortly before the 2010 elections? And then President Cory Aquino died, and the rest is history. Her son, Noynoy, who was just sitting there, enjoying his role as an only son of a famous couple, suddenly found himself being propelled towards the presidency. In a few shorts months, the tide had turned and Noynoy became the president of his country.

Why are so Filipinos so “kidnappable”? The latest is that 21 of our countrymen who had gone to Syria as peace-keeping officers of the United Nations were snatched by Syrian rebels and held hostage. Do those rebels not know that these were neutral people, there only because the United Nations had conscripted them to help keep the peace? But at least we have been assured that they are not being tortured or abused, unlike those hi-jacked by Somali pirates. Anyway, I hear they will be released soon.

But maybe I said that too soon? A very late report said that when a United Nations convoy came to Jamla Village to get the Pinoy hostages, the Syrian military, who must have been watching the area, started shelling the place. So the U.N. group had to back out. Poor Pinoys. They seem to be caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, suspected by the rebels, a target for the military. How can they keep the peace that way?

The elections have not taken place yet, but there are two “graduating” senators who will surely not find themselves jobless. These are Senators Ping Lacson and Kiko Pangilinan, who, I hear, have already been recruited by the President for his cabinet. Kiko is believed to be eyed for the Agriculture Department, while Lacson would not tell, except to say that he will be the troubleshooter of Pinoy. I hope some people will not take that literally. There are talks that he will take over the Local Government Department, but where will Mar Roxas go?

***

A sector that will probably not be happy if rumors that Ping Lacson will head the DILG is that of the police. Remember how Lacson insisted on having them go through punishing exercises to get rid of their stomach bulk? And he is likely to do that again, giving himself as an example of how a professional cop should look. If that happens we will hear again about cops who are grunting and panting, to get rid of their spare tires.

By the way sports aficionados, especially those who love basketball and are fans of its players, are talking, many from the provinces will be flying to Manila where the two of the NBA's most popular athletes are said to be coming to play. One is the Lakers top guy, Kobe Bryant, and the other is the young Taiwan American Jeremy Lin. The game will be held in October, and I hope at a time when classes are over.*
