Farmers receive tractors

Farmers from Dumaguete City, Pamplona and Amlan towns in Negros Oriental received yesterday farm implements from the Department of Agriculture under the “Plow Now, Pay Later” program, to increase productivity and augment their income.

The hand tractors were coursed through the office of Gov. Roel Degamo and presented to farmers in yesterday’s distribution rites in Barangay Bajumpandan, Dumaguete, witnessed by provincial, city and town officials and DA personnel.

Dumaguete Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria said he believes the program will help the city become self-sufficient in vegetables and other farm produce.

He added the city earlier purchased a three-in-one tractor worth P1.89 million and a hand tractor valued at P205,000.

The Dumaguete Sangguniang Panlungsod also earlier approved an ordinance that allows the use of privately-owned idle lots for food production in the City.

Degamo said the program is in line with the food sufficiency initiative of Negros Oriental, being an agriculture-based province.

He said a big portion of the provincial government’s budget is for food production to become self-sufficient in rice, and the propagation of native chickens, hogs and other poultry products.*JG
