The Department of Agriculture in Western Visayas is urging local government units and agriculture information officers to intensity the campaign on the celebration of the National Year of Rice 2013.
This is intended to make the country sustainable in its rice production, Edna Garde, manager of the Farmers' Information Technology Center of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, said yesterday.
Garde said farmers, consumers, and lawmakers are encouraged to observe the NYR because they are the sectors to help meet the rice sufficiency level of the Philippines.
The campaign also aims to increase the income of rice farmers and improve the health and nutritional condition of every Filipino, she said.
Farmers are expected to apply new farming technologies to increase their production while lowering their expenses, she said. The Palay Check system is one of the technologies that assist farmers from land preparation to harvest, Garde added.
“If farmers will increase its production from three to five metric tons per hectare, the country does not need to import rice. Consumers, on the other hand, must only prepare or order what they can consume to avoid leftovers,” Garde said.
She said the NYR will make people aware that local rice farmers can supply their needs if they, too, will become responsible consumers.*LTG
