Ligutom urged to resolve
row on workers’ benefits

The retrenched workers of Shakey’s Pizza Robinsons Place Bacolod, also known as Island Pizza, yesterday urged the regional director of the Department of Labor and Employment Ponciano Ligutom to act on the Motion for Reconsideration filed by the management on his order to pay them P1,119,305.05 for underpaid service charges and other benefits.

Edbert Patria, president of the United Employees of Shakey’s Pizza-National Federation of Labor Unions-Kilusang Mayo Uno, said they wish Ligutom can resolve immediately the motion filed by the management and issue a Writ of Execution so the workers can get their underpaid service charges, 13th month pay, and overtime pay.

Ligutom told the DAILY STAR yesterday that, he still cannot issue the writ because there is a pending MR and he also cannot resolve it because it is still under investigation.

He said that after he decides on the MR, any party can also file their appeal.

All these are part of due process and the management also has the right to appeal, Ligutom added.

Patria claimed that the management closed their shop on Labor Day on the grounds of losses.

He added that the closure of Shakey’s Pizza came after they complained at the DOLE for their unpaid benefits and filed their certification election of their union.

“It is very sad that an employer like Shakey’s Pizza is not recognizing our freedom of association and their closure on Labor Day is an insult to us,” Patria said. It is the firm’s strategy to get away from paying their money claims and disorganize their union, he claimed.

Earlier, the management and the workers had agreed in principle to reduce the amount due to workers by 15 percent. As of press time yesterday, no official signing had been made between two parties.

Meanwhile, KMU-Negros also urged Bacoleños to boycott Shakey’s Pizza because of their unfair labor practices, its spokesperson Ronald Ian Evidente, also said yesterday.*LTG
