‘Devolving hospitals a mistake’

Senatorial candidate Miguel Zubiri said during his campaign sorties in Dumaguete City recently that devolving health services to the LGUs was the greatest mistake as hospitals should have remained the responsibility of the national government.

He said this will relieve the Local Government Units of the burden of providing funds for the operations, provision of equipment and medicines of the government hospitals.

He said he focuses on providing free universal health care coverage for all indigents and the transfer of fiscal responsibility of all district and provincial hospitals to the national government.

While reports indicate significant growth in the economy of the country, some 50 percent of the Filipinos interviewed in a survey by Social Weather Station rated themselves as “poor,” he said.

He said the passage of the Sin Tax Law is expected to generate P50 billion in revenues for the government, which can be put to good use for the purchase of free medicines and equipment for indigent Filipinos and upgrading government hospitals.*RG
