The Dumaguete Festival and Arts Society, in partnership with the Dumaguete City Tourism Office this month’s Santacruzan festival during the weekend.
City Sports Coordinator Ike Villaflores said the activity started at 10 a.m. with a motorized banca race at the Rizal boulevard, called “Palumba ug Pumpboat sa Daguit”. Participants are local fishermen who are pumboat owners and veterans in boat races.
In the evening, a benefit dinner and dance called “Kumbira sa Daguit” at the Rizal Boulevard, featured the level up band.
DUFAS president Youman Uymatiao said they adopted the word “Daguit” to bring to the mind, of the new generation, that it is the old nickname of Dumaguete.
He said Daguit means “to snatch,” derived from the city’s history when local maidens were snatched by moro pirates. It has since evolved into something that is characteristic of the place, the hospitality and friendliness of the people.
The DUFAS is a SEC-registered non-government organization with prominent personalities of the community who share a strong commitment towards development of the local tourism industry as members.*
