WNU advances to
Jr. PBA regionals

The West Negros University Jr. Mustangs beat Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts, 99-68, yesterday to clinch the provincial championship and advance into the regional finals of the 2nd PBA Coca-Cola Jr. PBA Youngstars in Cebu City this weekend.

Taking a three-point lead in the first quarter, 23-20, behind Kobe Vizcarra’s seven-point production and Ericson Yulo’s five-point delivery, the young Mustangs sustained the momentum in the second quarter to post a 48-34 halftime advantage.

The Thunderbolts tried to bounce back in the third quarter as Miguel Corteza exploded with 14 points, but the rest of the team had some difficulty in finding their range as only Sam Belangel managed to contribute an additional five points.

While BTTHS lagged behind in offense, WNU’s young guns sizzled with Jojo Pastias hitting 12 points in the third quarter to help the Jr. Mustangs establish a 20-point lead at 73-53, going into the final chapter.

Pastias remained hot in the fourth quarter and scored nine more baskets to finish the game with 28 points as WNU completed the rout with a 26-point production in the payoff period.

The Thunderbolts’ offense continued to falter in the final minutes despite Raf Canino providing some spark with seven points, while Corteza, who was waxing hot in the third quarter, suddenly found himself tightly guarded.

The Mustangs will be representing Bacolod/Negros Occidental in the regionals in Cebu.

First game for the Jr. Mustangs will be against Cebu on Friday, at 9 a.m., and against Iloilo at 3 p.m. on the same day.*NAB
