Lourdes Mercado’s birthday bash
I had just returned from a most enjoyable visit to my family in Davao City, when I got an invitation to attend the birthday celebration of my friend, Lourdes Mercado, president of our Negros Occidental Garden Club.
Des has been a friend from way back when we were both radio station managers – she with NBC-DYWB and yours truly with ABC-DYRH. Although we were competing fiercely for ratings, we still considered ourselves true colleagues in media.
The party was in full swing by the time I arrived at their Spanish-Mediterranean residence with Shirley Ledesma, president of our other club, Circulo de Bacolod, and her balikbayan kids from the USA. On hand to help Des welcome her guests was her better half, Vic Mercado, popular radio commentator, together with their children. The other guests, mostly members of the Garden Club, were already feasting on the numerous, scrumptious dishes especially prepared for the occasion.
Des’ son Vincent ‘Pau’, who is a chef, put his expertise to good use with his ‘to-die-for’ callos, dinugu-an and Duck L’Orange. Vic showed me his large collection of wines and liquor and even opened a bottle of sparkling champagne to celebrate the occasion.
The after-dinner conversation was even more sizzling as we talked about the latest, juiciest happenings in town. Sounds of unbridled laughter filled the room as the ladies added their own versions of the stories. (I tell you, nobody can laugh like the ladies of the Garden Club!). By the time we called it a night, it was already quite late.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DES!*
