Guv turns over P5M check
for farmers crop insurance
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday turned over a P5 million check to Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. president Jovy Bernabe as part of the Negros First Universal Crop Insurance Program (NFUCIP) at the Sugar Regulatory Administration social hall in Bacolod City.

The turnover was witnessed by Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, Senator Cynthia Villar and leaders of the sugar industry.

The program provides insurance for Negros Occidental farmers planting rice, corn and high value crops, and those engaged in fisheries.

Bernabe, in turn, turned over checks to the provincial government amounting to P458,048 for distribution to 180 farmers as indemnity claims.

As of this month, 5,660 farmers in Negros Occidental, tilling a total of 5,270.12 hectares, are insured under the NFUCIP, a report from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist said.

To date, about 1,786 farmers have received indemnity claims totaling P7.6 million, it added.*CPG
