A mongrel, or “asong kalye”, won the dog marathon conducted by the City Veterinary Office in line with the ongoing 65th Charter anniversary celebration of Dumaguete.
City veterinarian Lourdes Socorro said the owner of the dog, Marvin Florentini, won P1,500 in cash, a trophy and goodies for his pet, for winning the 3-kilometer category.
The winner in the 5K category was the Doberman of Genevieve and Arthur Fran Tolcidas, with Arman Menguito as handler; and the dog of Ruddi Cabalida in the 1.5K category.
Socorro said 94 dogs of varied breeds joined the run that started at 5:30 a.m. from the Kiwanis stage of Quezon Park in Dumaguete. There were 41 participants in the 1.5K, 35 in the 3K, and 18 in the 5K category, and the animals stayed on leash with their owners or handlers during the event.
Other winners were the dogs of Shalani Fe Antosada, Gladys Calinislinisan, Eliezer Gelicame and Caren Kate Atillo, 1.5K; Jick Iligan, Jarome Simon, Alejandro Collado and Curt Angel, 3K; and Ian Jay Macabenta, Jerahmeel Entera and Rommel Parcon, 5K run.
They won cash, trophies and accessories for their animals.
Veterinarian Greg Acuña, meanwhile, saved a Golden Retriever that failed to make it to the finish line due to heatstroke. The dog was rushed to an air-conditioned room and revived.*JG
