Gov. Alfredo Marañon, Jr. turned over two rice combine harvesters worth P2.8 million to the Negros Occidental Accredited Seed Producers Cooperative and the Gen. Malvar Irrigator’s Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Brgy. Gen. Malvar, Pontevedra, yesterday.
More than 900 farmers are expected to benefit from the farming equipment that can potentially cover around 3,174 hectares of farm land in the areas of operation like Bago, Valladolid, La Carlota, Sipalay, Hinoba-an, San Carlos and Pontevedra area, a press release from the Capitol said.
Marañon thanked the national government through the Department of Agriculture, because the agency paid 85 percent of the cost of the equipment of P1.9 million, while the province shared only a 15-percent counterpart or P210,000.
He also said that the equipment can make work easier and improve the harvest efficiency of hundreds of small farmers and contribute to rice self-sufficiency in the province.
Meanwhile, Pontevedra Mayor Jose Maria Alonso thanked the provincial government for choosing his municipality as a recipient of the farm machine.*
