After debuting with an impressive 6-1 win against fellow newcomer Manila Jeepney FC, Bacolod City-based Ceres will face Laos FC this Sunday, 8 p.m., for their second assignment in Group A of the the United Football League Cup at the Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill, Taguig City.
Ceres' convincing win against Manila Jeepney affirmed the team's status as one of the squads to watch out for in the UFL Cup. The Bacoleños need to place in the top three of their group after the single round-robin to advance into the next stage, the Round of 16.
Joining them in Group A are Pachanga Diliman FC, Philippine Army FC, Laos FC, and Manila Jeepney FC.
Going into Sunday's schedule, both Pachanga and Ceres enjoy a one game win in their group after Pachanga blanked Laos, 4-0, during their October 12 encounter.
Highlighting Ceres' debut in the UFL Cup the previous weekend was the five-goal surge in the second half after benefitting from a 30 th minute own goal in the first half.
Olaniyi Samson scored Ceres' second goal in the 58 th minute and Joshua Beloya made it 3-0 five minutes later as he eluded Manila Jeepney's defense.
Sean Iliff's goal in the 75 th minute prevented a shutout for Manila Jeepney as Samson connected with another marker in the 81 st minute followed by Jaime Poderoso's 83 rd minute goal for a 5-1 Ceres' lead.
Kim Jin Ho, one of the Korean players in Ceres FC, sealed the win for the Bacoleños with a goal in the 90 th minute.
The UFL Cup draws participating from 23 teams, divided into three groups of five and two groups of four.
In Group B are Kaya FC, Union Internacional Manila, Cimarron FC, and Manila All-Japan FC; while Group C is composed of Stallion FC, Philippine Air Force FC, Agila FC, Bright Star FC, and Cebu Queen City United FC.
Battling for the top three seats in Group D are Global FC, Team Socceroo FC, Forza FC, General Trias International FC; while in Group E are Loyola Meralco Sparks FC, Green Archers United FC, Philippine Navy FC. Blue Guards FC, and Dolphins United FC.
While being considered as a guest team in the tournament, Ceres FC carries the distinction as champion of the 2012-2013 PFF Smart National Club Championships.
The team earned the respect of the national football community after advancing into the PFF Smart Club finals by beating former UFL champion Stallion, Global, and Kaya. They sealed their victory with a 1-0 win over Pasargad in the final match.*NAB
