‘Mother kills self'

A woman, who killed her husband and one-year-old child in Hinobaan, Negros Occidental in June, hanged herself and died yesterday morning.

Police Officer 3 Eddie Napolis, case investigator of the Hinobaan police, told the DAILY STAR that Arlen Galan, 33, was found hanging at the second floor of her father's house in Zone 1, Brgy. Bacuyangan in Hinobaan, at about 6:07 a.m.

Investigations showed that Galan attached the rope to the timber truss of the house and hanged herself. Her father, Aderiano Abalayan, 61, discovered the body when he checked on her when she did not come down for breakfast, Napolis said.

Abalayan's cousins, from whom he asked for help, cut the rope and rushed Galan to the Eleuterio Decena District Hospital, but she was declared dead on arrival. The body is now at the Poras Funeral Parlor in Brgy. 1, Poblacion, in the city, and the police has requested the municipal health officer for an autopsy examination.

The police dismissed foul play in her death. Galan had reportedly suffered from postpartum psychosis and, about four months ago, killed her husband, Johnny, 50, and one-year-old son, Jay Mar, and hurt her three other children, Jay Mark, 1, Jevon John, 11, and 4-month-old infant, Johnny Jr. at their house.

She was brought to a mental facility in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, but was released since the institution houses only patients from the province.

Napolis said the mental facility will cater to patients outside Oriental if they have a relative to stay there and to take care of them. Since Galan is from Hinobaan, she was only given maintenance medicines and discharged.

Her youngest son is in Cauayan in Negros Occidental, and the oldest son is with the family of her husband in Negros Oriental, Napolis said.

He added that Galan was already considered well before she committed suicide, and had requested her cousin, whose name was not disclosed, to accompany her to the police because she felt sorry for what she had done to her husband and sons.

No suicide note was recovered at the crime scene, the police said.*SGG
